18th Century Child's Shoes

Leave a Legacy

Legacies are our most significant source of income. We have ben fortunate over the years to receive bequests that have helped us to extend our work. Would you consider leaving a bequest to help us continue supporting the Leeds art galleries?

How we use legacies

Since 2020 we have purchased Reflections on the Aire by Atkinson Grimshaw and the Townley Commode from the Hurst Bequest; acquired the archive of Yorkshire based fabric designer Sheila Bownas and paid for the development of the Butler’s Pantry at Temple Newsam from the Pippa Rakusen Bequest; purchased paintings by Jill McKnight from the Pemberton Bequest and a work by Charmaine Watkiss from the Simpson Bequest as well as purchasing a pair of eighteenth century children’s shoes from the Ginsburg Bequest.

These acquisitions are a vital resource for education and outreach projects. The Gallery’s Youth Collective set out to find the exact spot where Grimshaw took the view for Reflections on the Aire and created a mural placing themselves at the site.

How to leave a legacy

Leeds Art Fund is a charitable organisation and all legacies to it are exempt from Capital Transfer Tax and aggregation without limit. Bequests can take the form of a lump sum, or a residue, or a fraction of your estate. Some members might prefer to consider leaving works of fine or decorative art, but if you are considering this it would be helpful if you could first seek the advice of the Hon. Secretary who can let you know if any item will fit into the permanent collection of Leeds Museums and Galleries. Acquisitions. See here for information on the Leeds Museums and Galleries Collections Development Policy.

The following would be a suitable form of words to send to your solicitor for inclusion in your will:

“”I bequeath to Leeds Art Fund a legacy of £………. free of all taxes.””

The Hon Solicitor of LAF is always very happy to advise potential benefactors.”
